The first Super 12 series were held in 1996, born out of the success of the 1995 Rugby World Cup.


The first Super 12 rugby Try was scored by Lama Iremia -Blues V Hurricanes, Palmerston North, NZ 1996. Features rugby greats such as Shaun Fitzpatrick, Robyn Brookes, Frank Bunce, Jonah Lomu, Taine Randell, George Greegan, John Eels, Bobby Skinstad, Gary Teichman, Chester Williams and Jean De Villiers

The opening Tri Nations tournament in 1996 was dominated by the All Blacks who stormed to victory undefeated, leaving the Springboks and the Wallabies with just one win each - against each other.  In 1998, the series was somewhat of a turnaround for all nations with South Africa winning the tournament and Australia finishing second.
